The <abbr> HTML element indicates that the enclosed text is an abbreviation. The title attribute can be used to specify the word being abbreviated.

What is an abbreviation?Edit

This is a common topic of confusion. An abbreviation is any short form of a word. That means that taking away a few letters of a word and adding a period at the end is an abbreviation.

SemanticsEdit

This element can be used for any shortening of a word. An acronym, however, is a specific kind of abbreviation where the first letters of the words in a phrase are used to make a new word. However, HTML provides the <acronym> element for defining acronyms.
